A few words

NEON signs are a global language of communication, often intertwined with advertising and consumption. However, in recent years the use of NEON light tubes has crept into contemporary art and installation art. The aesthetics of NEON signs transport us to cities such as Hong Kong and New York and to films and fantasy worlds from the future. These images may evoke science fiction and cyber punk culture, but the manufacture of NEON tubes remains a handmade art even today. These signs are made in the traditional way by skilled craftsmen who, with the help of heat, bend the glass tubes and give them the shape of words!

For the lighting installation in the City Hall Garden, the words “World” and “Light” are created from NEON tubes in various languages and scripts. The aim is to bring out of the words the idea of multiculturalism and the coexistence of all of us in the world and in the light. Interestingly, in some languages these two words have a common etymology and root.

Kόσμος, world, мир, كون , dünya, 世界, mondo, light, light, светлина,lumière, luz…

The bright words are hidden in the trees and are waiting for the visitors of the Cosmopolis festival to discover them, to read them, to photograph them, to share the experience of “Cosmos” and “Light” in an artistic way.
