A few words

The 1st edition of CosmoLights will be introduced during Cosmopolis festival 2020. Creative projection mapping designers from around the world are invited to take part, in order to connect the history and the exceptional architecture of the Municipal Tobacco Warehouse of Kavala with a unique spectacle.

The artists are given the opportunity to participate in a new projection mapping competition in Kavala-Greece and present their work to thousands of visitors in one of the most traditional and important locations of the city.

WHAT IS PROJECTION MAPPING?

3D Projection Mapping is the method by which a 3D video is projected on a two-dimensional level. The result is impressive and makes entire buildings change shapes, colors, fall apart and be built again in seconds.

BUILDING INFO

The Municipal Tobacco Warehouse is one of the most impressive buildings in Kavala. The building has an Ottoman design in a style that is known as Ottoman neoclassicism, with strong influences from the neoclassical architecture of Europe. The parapet of the roof is the most striking part of the building, upon which four crowns shine out. Abstract representations of flowers, suns and family crests adorn this intriguing and unique facade.

The Municipality of Kavala purchased the building in 1970. The internal wooden frame of the tobacco warehouse has been retained, while the warehouse itself has been repaired and the building’s architectural and decorative virtues have thus been emphasised. Today it is used as a cultural venue, hosting permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as all different kinds of events, such as concerts, conferences, etc.

Seeking inspiration in the beauty of this fascinating building, we are aiming to highlight its uniqueness by creating an extraordinary experience where history, culture, and art meet.

The event will start on August 27 and will last until August 30, 2020.

The 3 Finalists of the competition, who will be selected by audience and the festival curators, will each receive a prize.

The winner of the contest will receive the Grand prize of 1500€.

The second and third place will receive 1000€ and 500€ respectively.

We would like to thank the following 3d artists for their support, for creating the 3d files and making the 3d files available for free for all artists:

George Papanikolaou (3d artists/3d .obj file)

and Alessio Cassaro of Antaless Visual Design (3d artists/ building masks)
