A few words

In spring 2021, the 1st online international tango music composition contest was announced in the framework of the 1st Kavala Tango Days. It is an original idea and concerns the composition of a tango piece with a duration of 3′ – 5′ for an ensemble of 4 – 6 instruments. These are the 4 instruments of the Argentinean tango orquesta típica (piano, double bass, violin, bandoneon), with the optional addition of guitar, flute, percussion, 2nd violin or bandoneon, etc.

Each composition submitted had to be written in one of the styles of tango, tango vals, milonga, tango nuevo and allow for spontaneous dance performance by a pair of tango dancers. By the beginning of September 2021, when the deadline for submissions expired, participating composers from Greece and abroad had submitted 38 works. The works were then evaluated by the Artistic Committee consisting of: Vladimiros Simeonidis (orchestra director, composer and Assistant Professor at the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), chairman, George Panagiotopoulos (leading musician of the E.R.T. Symphony Orchestra, (leading musician of the TANGARTO Quintet), member and Alekos Papadopoulos, (musician, composer, dancer and tango teacher, founding member of the Tango Orquesta Locos de Atar), member. In October 2021, the Artistic Committee selected the 6 best works for the final.

Tango Moments : From yesterday to today

On Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 21.00 at the ANTIGONI VALAKOU theatre and within the framework of the 1st Kavala Tango Days, the 6 best works of the competition will be presented in a special artistic event.

In the first part, the TANGartO Quintet will present selected masterpieces of the Tango music repertoire. This is a musical group that has associated its name with the interpretation and authentic feeling of Argentinian Tangos. With an artistic career since 1996, it chooses the venues where it performs and puts on impressive performances. It is a versatile group with great dynamics and a wide repertoire, which seeks to perform original works rather than covers.

In the second part, the orchestra, accompanied by collaborating musicians, will perform the 6 works from the final of the Composition Competition in their first world performance. These works will be freely performed by the 3 pairs of maestros participating in the classes and shows of the Kavala Tango Days. Sebastian Himenez (AR) with Joana Gomez (POR), Gabriel Marino (AR) with Vassia Thanopoulou (GR) and Stelios Stamboulidis (GR) with Despina Amarantidou (GR) will present a small sample of their dance virtuosity to the city’s audience. At the end of the event, the Artistic Committee will select the three best compositions
